Skardu's First International Flight: A Milestone in Aviation History

Skardu, a precious gem located in the breathtaking landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan, has etched its name in aviation history as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) achieves a remarkable feat on the occasion of the nation's 76th Independence Day. On August 14, 2023, Skardu Airport bore witness to the momentous touchdown of its inaugural international flight originating from Dubai.

This momentous event was conducted by Gilgit-Baltistan’s Chief Secretary, Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani, who designated August 14 as the day when Skardu would welcome its inaugural international flight from Dubai. This significant milestone is poised to usher in a new era of connectivity. In the wake of this inaugural flight, PIA is prepared to initiate a weekly flight schedule, commencing the Dubai-Skardu route on Saturday, August 19, and reciprocally from Skardu to Dubai on Tuesday, August 22.

To ensure a seamless and convenient travel experience for passengers, PIA’s spokesperson emphasized that the inaugural Dubai-Skardu flight will eventually extend its route to the capital city, Islamabad, facilitating onward travel for travelers.

The pivotal role of Skardu Airport in achieving this milestone cannot be overstated. As the sole airport in northern Pakistan capable of accommodating larger aircraft, Skardu's runways have transformed it into a critical hub for long-distance flights due to the constraints of shorter runways at Gilgit and Chitral airports.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan accorded Skardu Airport the prestigious status of an 'international' facility. However, its full potential remained unrealized due to the absence of a dedicated refueling facility for international flights. Addressing this issue head-on, the diligent efforts of aviation authorities have borne fruit. The inauguration of the refueling facility on August 11 signifies a pivotal stride toward harnessing the airport's international capabilities.

In recent times, there has been a surge in tourism to the region, and the enhanced offerings of the airport are a reflection of this trend. With a dozen Airbus A320 flights establishing connections between Skardu and major cities across Pakistan, the region's stature as a prime tourist destination is being unveiled.

As the inaugural international flight graces the soil of Skardu, Pakistan commemorates its 76th Independence Day with a testament to progress, unity, and accomplishment. This milestone not only underscores the advancement of the aviation industry but also exemplifies the nation's unwavering spirit as it forges ahead into a future ripe with potential.
